Sunday Stealing MeMe

Sunday Stealing: The Alpha Meme

My roommate and I once: stayed up all night talking about the world

Never in my life have I: went to summer camp

High school was: necessary but thankfully it's over

When I’m nervous: my O.C.D. tendencies shows

My hair: is all natural

When I was 5: life was care-free

When I turn my head left: I see a paper flower my boyfriend made for me

I should be: living better

By this time next year: I hope to have a job! (lay-offs are still possible)

My favorite aunt is: yeah right! I'm not touching this one

I have a hard time understanding: computer/electronics jargon

You know I like you if: I open up to you

My ideal breakfast is: my great grandmother's biscuits, eggs, sausage, bacon, grits, cheese toast and orange juice

If you visit my home town: you'll be walking into civil rights history...yay Selma

If you spend the night at my house: hmmm...why are you spending the night?

The animal I would like to see flying besides birds: horses...unicorns anyone?

I shouldn’t have been: so easily sidetracked when it came to my goals

Last night I: watched The Last Dragon

A better name for me would be: Bunnita

I’ve been told I look like: someone you can tell your life story too without being judge. Really say that to me all the time.

If I could have any car, it would be: Mercedes-Benz SUV

Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

How many of us remember the magical world of Alice in Wonderland? The characters were memorable. I mean who could forget about the Mad Hatter or the Cheshire Cat. And Tweedledum and Tweedledee (not actually a part of Alice in Wonderland, they were in the sequel Through the Looking-Glass) have become a part of our culture. Think about how many times have you called a friend Tweedledum?

As we got older then we started noticing the oddities of the book. Many people have come to believe that the story in one psychedelic trip. And if you read the book in that context you can certain see why people would get that notion.

Now Alice in Wonderland is being made into another movie. Disney Films has gotten director Tim Burton to bring a new twist to the story. It stars the actor with a thousand faces aka Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Appropriate, don't your think? I love Depp's versatility.

Here's the trailer for the film. I'm not sure if I'm going to see it as I tend to go to the movies to watch action films. But Depp is in it so it's a possibility.

Eva Patterson was turned out and turned on to drugs by her mother and her mothers boyfriend Jahden after they held her down and injected her with heroin. Why? So that Jahden could rape her without a fight. Soon her mother got jealous and made her daughter come up with her own money to buy smack. So, barely into her teens, Eva began doing whatever she had to do to get money. After getting kicked out of the house she went looking for a place to shoot up only to have a son inside the industrial size dryer. Leaving the baby in good hands she went to live with her aunt.
Her cousin Fiyah ends up going to jail on a mandatory gun charge for her. While locked up he becomes indebted to King Brody. Brody wants Eva. Knowing the rep that Brody has she wants nothing to do with him. Plus she's in love with her man Mello. Fiyah not wanting to die because he surely knows that if Brody doesn't get what he wants, Fiyah and Eva both are walking targets.
Brody works his own special evil on the family and anyone else he feels like it. When it's all said and done people are murdered, lives are changed forever and those who were able to survive the aftermath is left to deal with the guilt of their part in the tragedy.
If you like urban/street lit then you'll love this book. If you like a happy ending then you will not. I don't usually get emotional over a book or a movie but I really felt empathy for Eva. All I can say is this, no one knows how they will handle certain situations until they are faced with them but talk about a disappointment of a man we are shown in Fiyah.

Alice Hoffman tweets her disapproval

Author Alice Hoffman tweets her disapproval about a review of her novel “The Story Sisters". Apparently Boston Globe writer Roberta Silman gave away too much of the plot. She also gave the novel mixed review saying that it did not quite leave up to Hoffman previous works.

After Hoffman read the review she posted Silman's email and phone number via tweet encouraging her fans to tell Silman just what they thought about the review. Hoffman later apologized for things getting a bit out of hand.

Read about the story here.

I must say that the book differs from the movie. Once you get into the story itself without the authors other crap is an okay read. But the movie is the real “Good Part” verison. The author extra notes and the prologue was unnecessary. In fact if I hadn’t ever watched the movie I would have shelved the book 3 pages into the prologue.

This story is a pampered young woman who is so accustomed to wearing the latest of everything that she finds herself escorting on the side of her day job. While out on her first “date” she meets Vegas. At first everything is fine, great in fact but Vegas is a drug dealer and as with all drug dealers the life will catch up with you. The fairy tale rapidly becomes a nightmare. This novel has lust, love, fast money, and death. It didn’t end the way I thought it would either. Definitively not a happily ever after.

Omar Tyree quits Urban Lit

I am late in writing this response as Mr. Tyree had made this statement last year. This is  quote from him taken from The Daily Voice...

“If the only way I can earn a living now in African-American adult fiction is to sell my people the same poison that they’ve become addicted to, then I quit with my artistic integrity still intact, while moving on to a more progressive mission.”

I happen to like the urban lit genre. To me is it like action movies. You are not reading them for any knowledge or enlightment. It is entertainment. Omar Tyree had been one of my favorite authors though he novels have gotten to bit a boring and not up to par. Though he arrogantly wouldn't admit it he possibly has only one classic in Flyy Girl. Honestly, I've been trying to finish his novel Leslie for two years! Maybe if he was so disenchanted with the urban lit genre that he has grudgingly been lumped into he should have considered retiring from it a while ago as his contempt seemed to affected his later novels. I am still a fan of Tyree but I must admit that his comments has impacted my opinion of him.

Stephen King criticizes Meyer

This was taken from the site omg.yahoo.com

'In an interview with USA Weekend, the bestselling author compared Meyer with J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. According to Stephen, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. "She's not very good." '
TO READ MORE GO HERE
There are certainly books that I have read that were tedious to get through and some that I would say are completely horrible. But those books usually don't do that well sale wise. Stephenie Meyer has certainly sold alot of books and have become very popular. Complexity of the storyline does not guarantee at great story and I dare say not a definitive sign of a great author.

Dark Series

One of my favorites series is the Dark Series books.  I'm going to do a in depth review of the Dark Series.  And for those who love the books as much as I do maybe you'll see something that you overlooked before or maybe catch something that I've forgot.

I hope to compile a decent list of characters, words, places, spell and more. So keep a heads up for the fun. Also look for my in depth look into Harry Potter.
